When it first came out, Kesey was hailed as opening up the sordid underworld of bikie gangs in the US. It was controversial, middle class titillation. Forty years on, time has revealed the true value of Hells Angels - Keseys book reads like a contrived and somewhat clumsy attempt at shocking conservative America.

The facile caricatures that stand for real people and events are composed with all the subtlety of a teenage anti-parent manifesto. In short: its not a great book, but the thats what makes it important. The fact that Hells Angels played to such a wide audience tells me more about America at the time than a more accurate depiction might have.
